Discover why it's time to ditch the mattress and use a hammock as a bed.

Trying to get a good night’s rest can be frustrating, especially if you sleep on an uncomfortable mattress. You find yourself constantly tossing and turning in the middle of the night and are tired of losing sleep.

You finally tell yourself…

…It’s time for a change.

But, before you go and buy another expensive mattress and find yourself in the same situation, it may be time to dump the mattress and use a hammock as a bed instead.

You might be asking yourself, is sleeping in a hammock better than a mattress? Are hammocks good for your back? Can a hammock really solve all my sleep problems?

Luckily for you, this article will answer all these questions and explain why using a hammock as a bed will improve your sleep and quality of life.

What is a Hammock?

The hammock dates all the way back to 450 B.C. in Ancient Greece and has been used throughout history for its comfort, portability, and space-saving size.

Most people that used hammocks throughout history were in tropical climates or aboard military ships. As time went on, they became more popular and are now used by millions of people around the world.

Nowadays, the six main types of hammocks include:

  • Rope
  • Quilted
  • Brazilian
  • Mayan
  • Camping
  • Chair

Benefits of Using a Hammock as a Bed

1. Fall Asleep Faster

When it comes to sleeping in a hammock, not only is it more relaxing, but it will help you fall asleep faster.

According to a study by Current Biology, hammocks helped 12 men fall asleep faster compared to a mattress. The calm swaying that hammocks offer allowed for a quicker transition to peaceful rest.

The gentle rocking motion of a hammock also positively impacts your brain waves which helps you relax and leads to better, more pleasant sleep.

    2. Sleep Deeper

Deeper sleep is extremely important because it leads to better recovery after a long day and helps the body repair itself. A comfortable indoor hammock promotes deeper sleep because it offers the ideal sleeping position with less disruptions.

Not only will you feel more relaxed when you wake up from a deeper sleep, but your mood, energy levels, and immune system will drastically increase as well.

      3. Hammocks are Good for Your Back

Back pain is common, and millions of people suffer from it every day, but many of them don’t realize that their mattress is the main cause.

Bed manufacturers design their mattresses with pressure points, especially the cheaper ones. This can be extremely uncomfortable to sleep on and causes unwanted back problems.

However, a comfortable hammock bed is designed with no added pressure points and provides a natural sleeping position for the human body. Sleeping in a hammock will help relieve your back pain and remove the risk of serious injuries.

        4. No Risk of Bed Bugs or Dust Mites

Mattresses are a breeding ground for nasty bed bugs, dust mites, and other insects. This is not only unsanitary to sleep in, but it is expensive and time consuming to constantly clean your bed to remove them.

When you start using a hammock as a bed, you don’t have to worry about these dirty pests. Hammocks are also extremely easy to clean, removing any chance of these insects making your bed their home.

          5. Helps with Insomnia

It can seem hopeless when you are struggling to fall asleep night after night and dealing with insomnia. You’ve tried all the smart phone apps and pharmaceutical technology, but all you may need is a cozy hammock to sleep in.

Hammocks can improve sleep in many ways, even helping cure people of their insomnia. It provides the feeling of sleeping in a safe and relaxing womb, which is more natural than sleeping on a firm surface.

Investing in a hammock gives you another sleeping option, especially if you are losing sleep every night or suffering from back pain.

Sleeping in a hammock provides better rest, helps your body and mind recover after a long day, provides more support for your back, eliminates the risk of bed bugs, and has even been shown to cure insomnia. My husband and I have been sleeping in our hammocks for approximately 5 years now. We have a brand new mattress; however, we choose to sleep in our hammocks for a more restful night’s sleep without body aches & pains that traditional beds cause. We now have 16 different hammocks to choose from. Definitely recommend!

For about the past 4 months now I’ve been sleeping in hammock. I have no more back pain and no more stiffness of the hips. I get a great night’s rest every night and I love it. I will never go back to bed again.

I sleep in a hammock indoors every night and it’s the best sleep I’ve ever known. I got into hammock camping in 2008, and after the first night of discovering how comfy I slept, thought to myself, “sure wish my BED was this comfy”. Then, not too long after, I was in Target and saw a hammock stand for the first time ever, only one left, on clearance sale for 60 dollars, regular price was over 150 dollars, and decided to try my hammock indoors and have never wanted a regular bed again. Now, though I still have that great hammock frame after all these years, I have proper weight rated screw eyes screwed into two adjoining studs in the walls. It makes it nice as all I have to do is unclip the hammock from one side, toss it to the other side, and I have all the room a bed would take up to use for other uses instead. LOVE my hammock!! 😊

I want to sleep in my side but not have my shoulders ache. Would a hammock provide that type of aupport?

We have a mayan hammock – which you actually lie across-ways in, and is very comfortable. You can have up to three adults in it, and it is v. comfortable. We don’t use it for sleeping, just outside for a good dozing spot, but I have been thinking of hanging one up inside.

i just received our new hammock as my husbands fathers day gift. I think its a quilted hammock. When we lay in it there is no support behind our knees. It is very uncomfortable. Any suggestions?
